Choosing the right engagement ring for your fiancée is an extremely important step in getting engaged. It is in Genesis that we see the first recorded instance of an engagement ring being used. Except, in this case, it was a nose ring rather than a ring worn on the finger.

Engagement Ring Traditions

There are a lot of traditions associated with engagement rings. In ancient Rome, for example, couples might exchange rings bearing the image of two hands clasped together. The Irish Claddagh ring was a derivation of this practice.

With the Claddagh ring, though, single people can also wear the ring – if the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart pointing to the fingers, the person is single. If pointing at the heart, it signifies that the person is in a relationship.

On the left hand, the way the Claddagh ring points indicates whether the wearer is engaged or married.

Placing the ring on the left hand was also a custom begun in Roman times – they believed that the vein in the fourth finger led directly to the heart.

The custom of using a diamond as the stone in an engagement ring started only in Medieval times and is not an ancient practice at all. In fact, in ancient Egypt, the amethyst would have been a more likely candidate for this kind of ring as it represented truth and fidelity.

What Ring to Choose

That will depend entirely on your fiancée and their tastes. You should choose something that they would love, and that would suit them and their lifestyle. For example, if your fiancée seldom wears a lot of jewelry, getting a plain and simple solitaire design might be the way to go.

If you have no idea what ring to get, you could perhaps find a placeholder ring – a less expensive one – that you use when proposing and then get your fiancée to help choose the actual one.

Where to Get the Ring

No matter what type of ring you are looking for, Itshot is one place worth checking. There are rings of every description there, and rings to suit every budget as well. Whether you want a plain solitaire ring for your fiancée or something with a lot more bling, it is your one-stop shop before you propose.

Planning the Proposal

The one thing you won’t be able to get there is the courage to propose. That can be a nerve-wracking experience in its own right. There can be a lot of planning that goes into the proposal and making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

There is always a concern that something could go wrong. We have all heard the horror stories about proposals falling flat. Like the one where the fiancée swallowed the ring baked into a dessert and had to have it surgically removed.

All you can do is to come up with a great plan to surprise your fiancée, do some deep breathing exercises and then pop the question. Planning it out carefully is your best solution.

No matter how you propose, however, the upshot is that you want to marry your intended. A heartfelt proposal should win the day even if your plans do end up going awry. And, who knows, it might even end up being a funny story for your kids later
